Sciences Echos - Equal opportunities

What is equal opportunity? What is the history of this notion? How can it be put into practice? What are its main obstacles? Where does France stand? Discover the new Sciences Echos educational video "Equality of opportunity" by Alain Trannoy, economics researcher (EHESS/AMSE).

What is equal opportunity?

What is equal opportunity? Whether it's women's access to the most prestigious positions, or the probability of a child of a blue-collar worker passing his or her baccalaureate compared to a child of an executive, it's about the opportunities that each individual has according to his or her membership of a sub-group (gender, socio-economic background, origin, etc.). What is the history of this notion? How can it be applied? What is its main obstacle? Is France a society where everyone has the same opportunities?

Alain Trannoy is Director of Studies at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS), and a member of the Aix-Marseille School of Economics (AMSE). He is interested in public economics, and works on issues of inequality, its measurement and the redistribution of wealth.

Discover his answers (in French) in this new Sciences Echos educational video!

About the Sciences Echos conferences:

At the crossroads between science and society, the Sciences Echos conferences are a meeting place for researchers in economics, and citizens who want to understand "economic reasoning". They are aimed primarily at high school, preparatory and undergraduate students.

Each conference is accompanied by animated videos for the general public, available on the Youtube channel of the Aix-Marseille School of Economics (AMU/CNRS/EHESS/Centrale Mediterranée).
