MT180 2023: an exciting final!

On March 21, science popularization enthusiasts and the curious gathered in the Toga auditorium of Marseille's Faculty of Medical and Paramedical Sciences, to actively support the candidates in the regional final of the international "Ma thèse en 180 secondes" (My thesis in 180 seconds) competition.

Reading time: 2 minutes

Twelve talents from the universities of Aix-Marseille, Avignon and Toulon each had three minutes to share their theses in a synthetic, eloquent and convincing way! Chemistry, management, health, law, psychology, etc. - these were just some of the themes that showcased the richness and eclecticism of research carried out in the region.

Microbiology, phantom limbs and war: discover the award-winning PhD students

At the end of the presentations, which were watched attentively by over 300 people and viewed more than 2,000 times on the AMU YouTube account, the jury awarded three prizes:

  • 1st Jury Prize: Baptiste Kergaravat, PhD student in the Microbes Evolution Phylogeny and Infections unit (Aix-Marseille Université) for his thesis entitled "Mise au point d'enzymes innovantes pour la lutte contre les phytopathogènes, les champignons et les insectes".
  • 2nd Jury Prize: Claire Mahe, doctoral student at the Institut des Sciences du Mouvement (Aix-Marseille Université) for her thesis "Sciences du mouvement humain. Interactions between phantom sensations and walking in lower-limb amputees".
  • 3rd Jury Prize: Thomas Ramonda, doctoral student at the Centre méditerranéen de sociologie, de science politique et d'histoire (Aix-Marseille Université) for his thesis "Violence de guerres de la Guerre de la péninsule: la prise en charge des soldats de l'Empire par le service de santé en Espagne (1808-1814)".

Winners qualify for the national semi-final

This year's jury was made up of Christine Morin-Messabel, professor of social psychology at Lyon 2 University, Salima Rafai, physicist and CNRS research director at Grenoble Alpes University, Yves Barille, Airbus Helicopters communications director, Gilles Rof, journalist, and Priscille Riondel, AMU doctoral student and winner of the 1st regional jury prize 2022.

Baptiste Kergaravat also received a majority of votes from the public (in the audience and online), making him the lucky winner of the Public Prize! The 1st and 2nd Jury Prize winners have thus qualified for the national semi-final in April 2023, in the hope of reaching the national and international finals! Good luck to them!
