CCIs: let the music play!

The cultural and creative industries (CCIs) are vital to the vitality of our culture and its dissemination. Visual arts, heritage, music, performing arts, cinema, publishing or video games (to name but a few), the CCI sector represents a significant number of employees and a sizeable market (49.2 billion euros in 2019). In this article, let's talk music!

A university that promotes music

Aix-Marseille Université loves the 4th art! The university's music and sound program, both in terms of training and research, offers a wide range of options, from musical analysis to acoustic techniques. On the teaching side, there are 14 specialized training courses (bachelor's, master's and doctorate), bringing together a total of 459 students.

Research into sound and music

At the same time, three research laboratories are working on sound and music. The Laboratoire d'Études en Sciences des Arts (LESA) covers all AMU's artistic sectors, including cinema, cultural mediation and, of course, music and music sciences.

The PRISM* laboratory (Perception Représentations Image Son Musique) studies image, sound, and music as manipulable and measurable research objects, but also as artistic practices capable of transforming reality and its discourse. Its achievements give rise to valorization initiatives through industrial and social partnerships. The combination of fundamental sciences, human sciences and artistic creations is at the heart of its scientific project. It spans the fields of physics and signal processing, art and aesthetics, medicine and neuroscience.

Finally, the Laboratoire de Mécanique et d'Acoustique (LMA, AMU/CNRS/Centrale Méditerranée) brings together fundamental research and engineering-technology, and boasts nationally and internationally recognized skills in the fields of Solid Mechanics and Acoustics in particular. It develops original research ranging from the understanding of phenomena to the development of systems with high technological or societal stakes. These laboratories benefit from state-of-the-art experimental facilities and technical resources (recording studios, audiovisual editing platforms, anechoic chambers, multisensory immersion platforms, etc.).

As for musical practice, AMU offers all its student musicians computer-assisted music (CAM) workshops in partnership with 6MIC, a leading contemporary music venue based in Aix-en-Provence: so that "music doubles life"!
